Today we packed up our bags in Durango and drove to Ouray Colorado. We passed through a whole bunch of old mining towns on the way and stopped for lunch in a small town called Silverton. We loved the look of all the old fashioned homes and building along the streets. It isn’t anything that we would want to live in but one that we would love to visit often.
The road to Ouray was very steep with switchbacks along the way. When we were crossing over a high mountain pass it snowed on us. The small lakes that we passed were frozen over and there were patches of snow from the winter still on the ground. Kind of crazy to believe in the middle of June!
The road that was cut out of the mountain side must have taken a very long time!
We stopped on our way to see a couple of different waterfalls and this one was my favorite! All of the streams along the road and the waterfalls were running very fast and full due to the huge snow storms this past winter. Everything was very beautiful!!!
Once we got to Ouray we decided that we wanted to stay for one more night on our honeymoon so we made reservations at the Twin Falls hotel. We toured a little part of the town and then went out to get some ice-cream for Dallens Birthday!!! BIG 23!
Afterwards we went on a little walk on the box canyon falls road to see where the water had cut out the rocks to form a stream. It was pretty cool to see how deep the crevasses in the rocks were and to think that it was all formed by water over time.
That night we ate at a Mexican restaurant that had money pinned to the ceiling all over the place. We asked the waitress what it was for and how they placed all of them up there and she replied, “You have to donate a dollar to find out.”…So we donated a dollar and watched her as she put a thumb tack through the dollar, wrapped it around a stack of quarters that were taped together, and threw the money to the ceiling. The tack went through the wood and that’s how they got the money to stay. All of the money that was donated went towards fire fighters in the area. We thought it was a pretty cool and unique idea.
After dinner we went back to our hotel and swam in the hot springs that they had there. It was a nice place to stay and we had fun watching the sun go down.
